Tour Diary - April 2005

1 April, Estoril Open De Portugal, 2nd Round 71 (Ev)
As yesterday, it was the putting that gave me an average score. Many shots got close to the pin, but I didn’t make anything out of them. Started off the 8th today with an encouraging birdie. Par on 10 and a bad bogey on 11 as well as 12. Two nice birdies on the par three’s 14 and 15 after two good tee shots. Six straight pars after that and had a birdie chance from 1.5 metres on 4, three putted from there and got bogey! Had another three putt from 10 metres on 6 and finished off with a two putt for birdie on 7. Overall a little bit of a disappointing round, as I thought my game was going to be better today compared to yesterday. Practiced a lot on the putting green after my round, and I hope it will show in my score tomorrow. See you then, Niclas.

2 April, Estoril Open De Portugal, 3rd Round 68 (-4)
We had a very long day at work today. My round took over eight hours in total. We had three rain delays and it was very windy most of the day. But, I still managed to play very well in the end. Made a very bad start and was three over for the round after six holes. Was especially disappointed after 5 where I hit a huge drive and a 9 iron close to the pin and three putted. Felt much more positive after the par five 7 where my 5 iron stopped three metres from the pin for eagle. On 8 I hit an average wedge and holed an eight metres putt for birdie. On 10 I hit a very long drive and a hard, low 3 iron that gave me a three metres putt for a another birdie. For the second day in a row I made back to back 2s for birdie at 14 and 15. I dropped a shot at 17 and my last birdie for the day came on 18 where I hit a very good drive in to the head wind, and an excellent 5 iron to four metres from the pin. So, overall, I’m quite happy with my game today. I’m tied 10th right now and look forward to play my fourth round tomorrow, even though I’m now starting to get a bad cold after spending so many hours out in the bad weather. See you! Niclas.

3 April, Estoril Open De Portugal, 4th Round 70 (-1)
After a tentative start I was playing well from the 4th onwards. Well, but not brilliant though, and as I couldn’t seem to get the ball in the hole I just made a lot of pars. A two putt birdie on 7 was the exception but I drove it out of bounds on the short par four 11th to go back to level par. Birdied the 15th but really never got scoring well and finished just one under par, but was playing at least ok. Have been driving the ball well all week though and expect to have everything ready for the next tournament, Open de Espana. A little bit of work on my putting needed before that! Will now travel back home to England and have one week off with a lot of practice and spending time with my family. See you soon! Niclas.

13 April, Jazztel Open de Espana
Went down to Spain last Monday for this weeks tournament, Jazztel Open de Espana en Andalucia, played at San Roque, Cadiz. This is a very familiar course to me, as I have played here twice before in the qualifying school for the European Tour. Not too bad memories as I won once and finished second the other time. It is really nice to be back for a tournament and not another qualifying school! The course is magnificent and the weather so far has been great. Played in the Pro Am today and had a really good time. Will do some practice during the afternoon and then spend some time in the gym. Will start from the 1st tee tomorrow at 2pm together with Nick Dougherty and Stephen Dodd. My swing feels OK and I am, as usual, really looking forward to play! See you tomorrow, Niclas.

14 April, Jazztel Open de Espana, 1st Round, 74 (+2)
Had a quite tiresome round of golf today, where three holes in particular - 8, 10 and 12- set the score. I had a good start though, with a birdie on 1. Made an unfortunate double bogey on 8 and then was hoping for a birdie on the par five 9th after landing my tee shot purposely on the 10th fairway, which gave me a shorter distance for my second shot, but I only made par. On 10 my drive landed in the middle of the fairway and as I easily could reach the green in two I left the hole with a very disappointing bogey and it felt like if two shots were lost instead of one. Birdie on 11 and thought I would get things going again. Disappointed after 12 where I missed my tee shot into the fairway rough, and as my second shot over the trees landed unexpectedly in the water I got my second double bogey of the day. Played my last six holes much better and finished off with a nice birdie. Hopefully, the wind will calm down a little bit tomorrow, today was extremely windy. I am tied 66th, but still hoping for a good result in this tournament. See you after my round tomorrow! Niclas.

15 April, Jazztel Open de Espana, 2nd Round, 71 (-1)

Started off the 10th tee today with two straight pars. Continued to play very well despite a bad bogey on 12 and made the turn on +1. Overall I think I had a very good round of golf, except that no putts dropped. The biggest disappointment came on the par four hole 4th, where I hit a very good drive straight into the strong head wind. A 8 iron from there that landed a little bit short on the green and I three putted for bogey. Everything turned around on 5 where I purposely hit my tee shot to the middle of the 6th fairway. Hit a spoon just short green and made chip and putt from there for birdie! On my finishing hole for the day, 9, I hit my drive a little bit to straight, I was meant to fade it into the wind and landed in the thick rough instead. Hit a good 5 iron from there that landed a little bit too long and 2-putted for birdie. Finished my second round of 71 and +1 in total, in a good mood and I’m of course looking forward to play during the weekend. I'm tied 22nd and anything can still happen as the field is very tight right now. See you! Niclas.

16 April, Jazztel Open de Espana, 3rd Round, 78 (+6)
I played alright today but scored badly. +6 for the round doesn’t impress much and I was of course very disappointed afterwards. Started my round with five straight pars. Played my heavenwood from the 6th tee, but landed out of bounds and didn’t manage to do better than double bogey. Got another bogey on 8 without really hitting any bad shots. On 14 I went for a pin that was in the corner of the green, landed a little bit to long, made a half decent chip and missed my putt to make bogey. Finished off my round with another bogey on 18 where my second shot landed in the water, chip and putt for bogey. I practiced as usual after my round and will try to do my best to finish off with a decent score tomorrow to improve on my tied 58th. See you then, Niclas.

17 April, Jazztel Open de Espana, 4th Round, 78 (+6)
Many good shots today, but nothing seemed to go my way and the enthusiasm was hard to find after a while. Started off with a good drive and wedge on 1, the approach was a little bit low and I needed chip & two putt from back off the green for bogey. On 2 it was pretty much the same, drive, wedge to the back of the green, chip 2 putt for another bogey. On 9 my tee shot landed in the short rough to the right and from there I had a small tree in the middle of my line, only two meters in front of the ball. The second shot landed in the bunker. Chip to the back of the green and three putts from there, bogey. Easy birdie on 10. On 11 I was a little bit unlucky when my drive landed to the right of the fairway, bounced and then rolled out of bounds! Double bogey. On 12 my second shot was too short and the ball landed in water. Double again. Got some revenge on 17 where I hit a 315 yards long drive straight into the head wind. Hit a spoon from there to three meters from the pin. Then holed for my tenth eagle of the season! This was absolutely not my week, but I’m not worried at all as my game feels alright and what went wrong this week is definitely under control. Congratulations also to Peter Hanson, a good friend on tour that won his first European tournament this week. Well done! I will now take a two weeks break and spend time with my family and friends in England. There will be room for a lot of practice as well, promise! Take care, see you soon. Niclas
